Bio-Agriculture

Puerto Rico has a centuries-old agriculture tradition, but today’s agricultural industries requires an advanced infrastructure that is not very common elsewhere in the world. This is why we have made infrastructure a pillar of our Business Star Proposition.

Fertile Ground for Your Business

Puerto Rico offers some of the most attractive tax benefits for agriculture in the Americas. That would explain why our agricultural sector generates more than $800 MM each year, which includes eight of the largest seed production companies in the world. In addition, Puerto Rico has the only year-round mango production farm.

So how do we manage to keep businesses growing all year round? Here’s an overview of some economic benefits your company could enjoy:

  • 100% exemption on taxes for agricultural equipment
  • 100% exemption on property taxes (land, buildings, vehicles, etc.)
  • 90% exemption on contribution of earnings from agriculture activity
  • 50% tax credit for investment in eligible agricultural business

Puerto Rico is fully committed to developing an entrepreneurial and productive culture based on quality and competitiveness. We have also invested in maximizing the yield of high potential agricultural soils while developing sustainable operations. Monsanto, Pioneer Hi-Bred, BASF Agrochemical, Bayer-Crop science, Syngenta Seeds, and Rice Tec are among many seed companies that have found the island to be fertile ground for R&D with our tropical weather, consistent water supply, and ease of commerce with the U.S., attractive incentives and top-quality agricultural science talent. Due to weather conditions, 4 to 5 crops could be produced in a year, as opposed to the United States rate of one crop per year.

Advanced Infrastructure

  • A land-grant university, the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez campus, with an agricultural sciences research community and several agricultural experimental stations island-wide.
  • Supporting organizations such as INDUNIV Research Consortium and Puerto Rico Agricultural Biotechnology Industry Association.
  • Major R&D in agricultural products including early development stages of corn hybrids and other field crop commercial lines.
  • A Center for Agricultural Biotech Research and Training in the Ceiba municipality with a 22,000 sq. ft. facility.
  • Experimental stations with plenty of space for installing state-of-the-art greenhouses and facilities.
  • A wide range of seed research and field trials at several company research stations.
  • Micro-propagation and tissue culture facilities.

Also, Puerto Rico ranked first in total crops released in U.S. per APHIS data during the last 5 years. If you are looking for a place with great weather, tax incentives, a U.S. jurisdiction, solid infrastructure, great human capital and a propitious environment for Bio-Agricultural businesses, this is definitely the place.
