A True Sales Paradise

Puerto Rico is a commerce paradise for many retail companies. Several national and international chains have their highest grossing stores, in both sales and profitability, per square foot in Puerto Rico. For example:

  • The highest grossing Sears store in the world is in Puerto Rico.
  • The highest selling Kmart in the United States is in Puerto Rico.
  • The largest JC Penney store in the world (a full 4 stories) is in Puerto Rico.

In recent years, Puerto Rico has seen the development of new commercial establishments that have spurred an increase in commercial activity. These include: IHOP, The Disney Store, P.F. Chang’s, Victoria’s Secret, Cheesecake Factory, Olive Garden, Sephora and Microsoft Shop.

The island is home to b Plaza Las Américas in San Juan, the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean with over 1.8 million square feet, more than 300 stores, a 13-screen movie theater, and over 40 dining establishments.

Outlet shopping is also a booming business. The Puerto Rico Premium Outlets in Barceloneta and The Outlet 66 Mall in Canóvanas are among the most visited shopping spaces in the island by locals and tourists alike.

Last but not least, the recent inauguration of The Mall of San Juan brought the first luxury shopping center to Puerto Rico. The mall was built with an investment of $405 million. It is a two-tiered structure that houses 100 stores within a 640,000-square-foot facility. The prestigious Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue chain stores are the anchors, with 138,000 and 100,000 square feet, respectively. The mall was built in about 27 acres of land, near the San José Lagoon and the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge very close to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. A Crowne Plaza Hotel & Casino adjacent to the Mall is currently under construction.
